In a live debate during the 1992 presidential election a woman in the audience asked the candidates how the national debt had affected them personally.
 
Bush and Clinton answered the questions in quite different ways. Many political commentators believe that this was the moment when Clinton won the presidency.

The audience is never listening to what you are saying. They are listening for what it means for them.
